Food tip of the day

Don Lee Farms veggie patties are the shizzle

I'm probably going to get in trouble for this, since it's not organic and it comes from some anonymous frozen-food manufacturer, but the discovery of a veggie pattie that doesn't suck is good news that must be shared with the world.

As you're probably aware, most "veggie burgers" taste like cardboard. Most real veg-heads I know stay away from them because a) who wants a hamburger when you're a veg-head? and b) the cardboard thing.

But get thee to Costco and pick up a package of Don Lee Farms veggie patties. They're fresh, not frozen, and they taste like ... vegetables! I check the ingredient list, and what do I see: carrots, onions, celery, and bell peppers, with bread crumbs, seasonings, and sunflower seeds. Mmm ... good on a bun, a sandwich, a salad, or even torn up a mixed with rice.

This guy says DLF vegetarian meatballs are on the way! Happy day.

Beans

Sounds great!  I think for meat eaters a nice bean mixture carmalized just right on the outside.  Yep.

And the cost?

Since it takes a fraction of the amount of water, acreage, and fossil fuels to produce patties out of veggies instead of beef, can I expect to pay a fraction of the price of beef?

What if the government were to add in the externalized costs of heart disease and colon cancer to the beef burger.  Then would the veggie burger be economical?  Why exactly does a package of 4 veggie burgers (8 oz.) cost $4.50 or...$9.00 a pound?

If I were to buy some soy beans, some pintos, some brown rice, carrots, celery, etc., how many burgers could I make and how much would it cost me?  I understand that we Americans love convenience but I think the key to encouraging more people to become "veg-heads" is to show that it's much more economical in the long-run to eat vegetarian food that you prepare yourself, not pay hyper-inflated prices for packaged foods (at Walmart or Costco) when we can easily make these veggie burgers at home for much less.

Veggie Patties

I don't think that Boca tastes like cardboard.  However I agree with John.  We are paying to much for the convenience.  Not everyone can process beef so there is a reason to buy it from the store. But if its just veggies why not make it yourself?

I suppose if I run into them and they are on sale I will give them a try anyway they do sound decent thanks for the post.

My burger is better

I like Trader Joe's Vegetable Masala Burger.  Perfect for lazy vegan eating.

Not Organic

If your veggie burger has any non-organic soy, you're almost certainly eating genetically engineered food.  Organic and local are very important.  Veggie burgers aren't a good way to go anyway.  If you're going to eat meat, wild meat is healthier and probably less environmentally harmful than fake meat.  If you're eating veggie, eat nuts, beans, grains, and legumes for protein, not veggie burgers.

Thank you

I'll check it out next time I am in costco. Yeah, I like different veggie burgers. I am noticing more companies are offering more vegetarian options! ~ Cool ~

I made vegan chocolate cake the other day, - I bearly got to eat it as everyone around me was so busy stuffing their faces with it!  ~ made me smile ~
