Ah, St. Francis and the chipmunks!

Taylor Clark's essay is perfect. Especially useful is his distinction between PETA fanatics and the great majority of vegetarians. The moral is: Whichever side of the omnivore/herbivore divide you find yourself on, please do not be a dickhead. (His term.)

One of Ezra Klein's correspondents had an odd little conversation with himself, on whether the (semi-)vegetarian rule not to eat anything that ever had eyes applies to clams. "They must have eyes," he dimwittedly wrote, "but it doesn't matter if you can't see them."

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.

God, I wish.....

Surely in the next 24 hours somebody on a major blog will post the latest "if you eat meat you are a planet killer" diatribe and the vegan netwar will, once again, be on.

But for today. Peace.

Besides it's Friday and all my meat is frozen rock hard. Dinner is brown rice and last year's pesto.
