Cringe along with Terry McAuliffe, who explains why economists don't know nothin':

Maybe Clinton and McCain are on to something

What they are trying to avoid is a repeat of what has happened in Japan.  The most recent poll of voter sentiment in Japan shows support for Prime Minister Fukuda at a historically low level. According to the Daily Mainichi "74 percent disapproved of the reinstated provisional tax on gasoline, the result of the ruling coalition ramming a bill amending the Special Taxation Measures Law through the Diet into law."

It just goes to show that there is a lot of truth in the title of that recent book "The Myth of the Rational Voter."

It's About Selfishness, Not Being Irrational

People who have a selfish, myopic, unwise view of life and drive a significant amount and/or have a gas-guzzling vehicle, of course want lower gas prices.  This is completely rational considering their point of view.

The moral view is that consumption of fossil fuels, and even driving per se, is very ecologically and environmentally harmful, so we should at least discourage those things as much as possible with things like high gas prices.  Unfortunately, the vast majority of people are not evolved enough to take this point of view, so politicians pander to the lowest common denominator, which is people's fears, in this case their fear of not being able to drive as much as they want.

How many times...

... did he say TEMPORARY relief??

Are people really that short-sighted?
