McCain outlines priorities for first term; climate and energy make the cut

Posted by Kate Sheppard at 10:27 AM on 15 May 2008

John McCain is in Ohio today, where he gave a speech this morning about what he plans to accomplish by 2013. Progress on climate and energy is part of his vision for a better world at the end of his first term:

The United States is well on the way to independence from foreign sources of oil -- progress that has not only begun to alleviate the environmental threat posed from climate change, but has greatly improved our security as well. A cap-and-trade system has been implemented, spurring great innovation in the development of green technologies and alternative energy sources. Clean-coal technology has advanced considerably with federal assistance. Construction has begun on 20 new nuclear reactors thanks to improved incentives and a streamlined regulatory process.

Note that the only two "alternative energy sources" he mentions -- coal and nuclear -- aren't really "alternative." Nothing said about wind, solar, geothermal, tidal power, biofuels, plug-in hybrids, energy efficiency ...

He's got a new web video ad on the same theme: "2013." At least it features wind turbines. Watch below the fold:

Bush Campaigning Strategy 101

Keep it vague, Keep it positive

Construction on nukes...

...will not alleviate energy prices by 2013, since there's no way even one nuke plant could be constructed by 2013, much less 20 of 'em.

McCain and his "priorities"

How inane, Mr. McCain.

Reducing our dependence on imported oil is going to alleviate the threat of climate change? Does that mean domestic oil produces less CO2 than imported?

Reduce reduction on forign oil...

...and replace it with an increase in dependence on foreign nuclear fuel.

Appeasement Doesn't Work

It's clear to all that the "Greens" are a shakedown squad who use pseudoscience and obfuscation to try and get government subsidies.  They have scared a whole planet into submission...however, now is not the time to appease them.  They must be stopped and curtailed.  They are warping entire economies.  They are hurting the poor and middle class.  Greenomics is destroying the basic home and family and American way of life.   Don't follow the appeasers, John McCain, don't be a "Republican Obama" -- we must fight them on the beaches -- if they haven't already erected an "anti-human" barrier around them already....

All your base are belong to us!...

It's clear to all that the "Greens" are a shakedown squad who use pseudoscience and obfuscation to try and get government subsidies.

Government subsidies on what?  The only thing I know of that we want anything close to subsidies for is renewables...and we want tax breaks for that, not subsidies.  Ya know, tax breaks, those things conservatives are always shoutin' for?

They are warping entire economies.

Example of an entire "warped" economy caused by greens?

They are hurting the poor and middle class.

How so?  Real-life examples please?

Greenomics is destroying the basic home and family and American way of life.

Yes, just like Soviet Russia, and gay rights, and racial desegregation, and the Teletubbies, and Elvis' infamous rock an/or roll devil worship music!  We will soon rule all!

All your base are belong to us!  ;)

4 more years!

4 more years!  Bush-lite for president!

4 more years in Iraq and Afghanistan.  4 more years of gas guzzling, "clean" coal, nuclear power, and agribizz fuel farming!

4 more years!

4 more years of increasing debt to China and Saudi Arabia!

4 more years!  4 more years!

Exciting isn't it.  Well it worked for bush, why not?
