I give you clean coal:

The study, "Relations between Health Indicators and Residential Proximity to Coal Mining in West Virginia," found that in the 14 counties where the biggest coal mining operations are located residents reported higher rates of cardiopulmonary disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, diabetes, and lung and kidney disease. In each of those counties, mining topped 4 million tons of coal a year.

ff$%#@*&^!

Sounds like someone's batting for the nuke power, again!

OK,

coal is indisputably one of the principal enemies of the human race.

But let us be clear about what it is guilty of.

One would reasonably believe in a connexion between exposure to coal and coal dust, and cardiopulmonary disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, other ailments affecting the lungs, and hypertension.

But diabetes, and hypertension again, should perhaps only be correlated with coal-mining, not treated as effects.

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.

But, a cap and trade.....

program makes all that coal that you burn just the eensy-weensiest bit cleaner every year even while you're destroying mountains, valleys, lungs, hearts and livers and dumping ungodly amounts of crap into the air.

You can burn coal and have the result be clean and white as a bar of Ivory soap if you just invoke the proper arcana.

It's all explained here on Grist.

Of course it's still burningcoal but, really, it's much, much better.
