My New Favorite Commenter already has a bouquet picked out for me, but if you're still wondering what to send your sweetie for Valentine's Day, the Boston Globe offers some eco-friendly options. The Sierra Club and GreenLAGirl have also put together lists.

And you'll love my own "red-hot" ideas for a green holiday:

ah l'amour l'amour!

Amazing is a true romantic, Sarah, and plainly one with excellent taste.

But meanwhile, that nutmeggy chocolate bar from Seattle that Grist sent out in their appreciation package could quite possibly be addictive.

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.

Wow!

Back at you.  That proves my point.  An early unvalentine got more feedback than an actual one ever has.  Thanks both of you!

Grow some of those sunflowers Sarah.  You never saw anything so beautiful as the finches feeding on the seeds after the bright blooming wanes into fall.

Now where is that bird book that a friend of a wildlife scientist friend self published?  You both deserve a copy.  I'll try to find out where she has them available.

I guess that is the super unvalentine that keeps on giving until the finches flock to the sunflowers.

Or...

you could go organic with Organic Bouquet, where they have a large selection of both roses & chocolate, and Seeds of Change (my favorite sunflower is the Gloriosa Polyheaded, in name as well as appearance).

For my sweetie, I went with a cozy (red, natch!) Icebreaker merino wool sweater, perfect for all of our ice climbing, snowshoeing, snowy-day fun.

As for the much-maligned St. Valentine, I must admit that it is my least favorite holiday; however, I did once make a fun trip to see the Saint's bones (they are enthroned in an out-of-the-way church in Madrid) that is a great February conversation-starter.

Kosher, Organic Chocolate to add to the list

I love this list - especially the eco-undies (very cute!) :)  On a related note, I compiled a list of organic, fair-trade, kosher-certified chocolates perfect for Valentines Day over at The Jew & The Carrot blog.  Check it out here:

The LIGHT of my life

My boyfriend actually gave me a CFL bulb this past Christmas, and I thought it was one of the sweetest gifts I've ever received. He told me he chose the CFL that would last the longest (8 years) and wrote a little note on a post-it saying he wanted to stick around for at least as long as the bulb lasted. He was crossing his fingers that it wasn't a dud. So good so far. ;)
