Romney out

Mitt Romney dropped out of the presidential race today, which all but insures that John McCain will be the Republican candidate.

I wonder: how will Republicans and industry groups lobby against a carbon bill if their president supports it? That is a strategic dilemma I'm sure they have their finest minds working on as we speak.

good news

Glad to see the back side of Mitt the twit. He'd have been easier for one of those Democrats to beat, but if he'd have gotten the nomination, there would've been at least a slight chance that he'd be the next Prez, which would be hard to stomach. He kept Mass out of the regional greenhouse pact, fought against Cape Wind from the moment he stepped into office b/c his bankrollers told him to, etc.

With McCain vs Hillary or Obama, at least the three of them GET climate change, to a degree.

I'm with Eric

As a former MA resident, I was flabbergasted that he actually won that state, since he spent so much time bashing it once it became clear that he had presidential aspirations and needed to establish himself as "not a Massachusetts liberal". Compound that with the fact that he surrounded himself with party hacks rather than competent administrators (a la "heckuva job" Brownie) and I'm delighted to see his back as well. Onward.

Think back to 1977

Could R's oppose action on climate change if McCain was in the White House? You bet.

Apparently your youth means you do not know what the Democrats did to Carter in 1977-1981. Those of us who lived through the period know it's quite easy to oppose a president of the same party and to make hay while doing so.

In fact, I just read a terrific book of essays by Walter Karp, a former Harper's writer (because of a recommendation from someone here at Gristmill) called "Buried Alive" -- some great essays on the period, contrasting the Democrats "Surrender First, Posture Later" approach to Reagan with their uncompromising willingness to undercut Carter.

Will McCain support climate action?

McCain doesn't support Lieberman-Warner because it doesn't contain giveaways for nuclear, right? So what makes us think he'll support a climate bill as president?
