The agricultural lobby vs. the public interest, part 5435

Factory farms fight to avoid reporting on toxic emissions

Posted by Jason D Scorse (Guest Contributor) at 3:07 PM on 26 Feb 2008

This article in the WaPo shows yet again how insidious the agricultural lobby in this country is, and how we need leadership that will take it on. This time it's the factory farms fighting laws that mandate that they provide information on their emission of toxic gases (from animal waste).

Breaking the power of the agricultural lobby should be a top priority for the environmental community; at every turn it fights for corporate welfare and against environmental progress and the public good.

Corny Solution

The corn lobby killed us also with the corn ethanol thing. Check out the monster subsidy the tax payers are paying out for a very inefficient fuel.

There is no savings on corn ethanol when you factor in its inefficient combustion, the cost to make it and the subsidy.

The eons of time and nature was good to us down here. It was not until we become civilized that destroying our habitat become fathomable or fashionable.

Down with CAFOs!

Yes, breaking the power of the agricultural lobby should indeed be a top priority.

Breaking the power of the National Rifle Association should also be a top priority.

More radically, breaking the power of the culturally deep-ingrown prejudices regarding "livestock" (an obscene word) and hunting should be a major environmentalist priority.

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.
