Journey to the bottom of the Earth

CBS airs final segment of Antarctica series tonight

Posted by Katy Balatero (Guest Contributor) at 12:49 PM on 13 Feb 2008

CBS has been televising a series this week on climate change impacts in Antarctica. Monday's broadcast spotlighted how climate change has affected Adelie penguin populations. The segment last night focused on scientific research in Antarctica and what it might mean for our understanding of global warming (see video below). You can tune in tonight at 6:30 pm EST to find out about waste and recycling issues in our least-inhabited continent.

3 Steps Forward My Mechanical Man...

I was just watching the early episodes of "Lost In Space" on Hulu, the new streaming video site that's a venture of NBC and lots of other networks.   You can catch up on new or old shows at your leisure ( I watched the whole Tin Man series there).

Anyway, on the "Hungry Sea" episode, the Jupiter II crash lands on a planet and it has this really elliptical orbit.  So, they notice at first (from the robot which spews a -- paper tape (!) -- report about the planetary motion) a big drop in temperature.

The Robinsons go towards the equator in the Chariot while Dr. Smith stays in the Jupiter II and makes the robot heat his coffee.

But guess what...because of this highly elliptical orbit, the planet then goes through a super hot weather and the Robinsons have to stop their journey and hide under Mylar blankets...and then go back north to where they started.

So, this was in 1965 and already they were dealing with the effects of global warming and cooling but on another planet!
