Well, well, well. Who ever said that trashy romance novels couldn't change an endangered species' life?

Ferret-related plagiarism by romance novelist Cassie Edwards has brought the world more than just a discussion of the various outdoor places our readers like to get down and dirty. (But, um, that was very enlightening.) According to Smart Bitches Who Love Trashy Books, the site that started all the hoopla in the first place:

[Well-known romance novelist] Nora Roberts has volunteered to match up to $5,000.00 USD any donations made by Smart Bitches readers to Defenders of Wildlife, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that works to preserve not just ferrets but endangered wildlife across the US, most particularly that species much loved by paranormal romance writers: the wolf.

The offer expires January 31; some $2,200 has already been donated. So if you care it, ferret! Or something.

Many thanks to reader Shiloh for pointing this out to me.

love those wolf pups!

This is a sweet angle.  I shall have to remember it this semester, with my students: "If you plagiarize, I will have your head on a platter -- unless of course you want to do something princely for an endangered species."

Defenders of Wildlife is in fact one of my favorite conservation organizations.  For Christmas, I gave a few "adopted" animals to some young pals, including a polar bear (of course) to one of my godsons, the son of a chagrined petroleum engineer in the employ of Sun Oil.  Yuck yuck!

But please pardon me for being more than usually stupid.  To get Nora Roberts's matching donation, we need to go through the Smart Bitches site, apparently.  But I am afraid I am not a "smart bitch" (unlike Little Dog), and do not know what this means:

<<
To qualify your donation for Nora's matching gift, please email me at sarah@smartbitchestrashybooks.com with a screen cap or PDF of your donation receipt. You can block out your personal deets if like. I'll total up the collective donations and keep y'all appraised of the totals.

So, how does that work?  What do I do?

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.

the fundraiser

The dollar amount raised as of yesterday evening was $5032.  Including the matching donation from Nora Roberts, a total of $10,032 has now been raised.

Just to clarify, Nora Roberts isn't the author that plagiarized.  She's just attempting to bring something positive out of the mess going on.

So, how does that work?  What do I do?

If you're interested in getting in on, you'd just send in your donation and then forward an e-copy of your receipt to the email addy posted, blocking out whatever personal details.  All they need is the dollar amount.

Donate directly...

So, how does that work?  What do I do?

Since the matching donation limit was $5,000, and that has already been reached, ya might as well just donate to Defenders directly.

That's how it's being done anyway.  The blog owners were keeping track of the money their readers were donating for the specific purpose of having the matching donation.  But all of the donations had to go through the DOW website.
