Me on the radio

Posted by David Roberts at 11:04 AM on 16 Jan 2008

I was on RFK Jr.'s Air America radio show "Ring of Fire" the other day, talking about the lay of the land in the presidential race, climate-wise. Should you be so inclined, you can hear it here.

very nice, DR

I had never listened to that station -- well, since I do not drive, I do not listen to any radio -- , nor had I ever heard RFK Jr. speak.  What a strange, twisted, Dickensian voice he has!  Well, it would be Dickensian, if he were a Brit.  And he is certainly not shy about letting us know his purple opinions on things, is he.  I was wondering if he was ever going to shut up and let you talk.  But I guess that is the line of work he is in.

I am especially impressed by what you had to say about McCain, particularly that in a general election his position on energy etc. would be hard to distinguish from that of the Democrat.  And I look forward to your promised post on the subject.

By the way, "naif" has a diaeresis on the "i."  It is the masculine-gender form of the feminine-gender "naive," so it is disyllabic just like "naive," only with an "f" sound at the end instead of a "v" sound.

Really?

Shit. I assumed that at my, er, advanced age I would finally be past mispronouncing words that I'd read a million times but never had occasion to say. I'm still smarting from saying "seh-gyoo" for "segue" in college. Yes, college.

You may not be aware that RFK jr has a disease, or condition, or whatever it's called, of the voicebox, that basically tightens it up and makes it difficult for him to speak.  It's a shame, because -- various eccentricities like his opposition to cape wind aside -- he and Bernie Sanders are maybe the best political voices that get any kind of attention in the mainstream press, although even they have trouble breaking through.  And Dave of course.

Dave, what did Kennedy mean

when he talked about "unleashing entrepreneurs", since he obviously didn't like cap-and-trade?  carbon taxes?  I seem to remember being somewhat disappointed with his global warming policy proposals.

Dear David Roberts and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr......

Yep, I also think we are in need of collective plans for action in order to reasonably and sensibly address any of the global challenges induced primarily and essentially by the human species.

Individual actions are certainly necessary, but clearly not sufficient. Not even a billion individual acts would be adequate or could amount to what would be gained from one able collective response by the human community.  The human species will either learn to act collectively by cooperating and sharing, for the common good now as well as for future generations, or else reap the whirlwind, I suppose.

Our collective failure to so much as acknowledge virtual mountains of good scientific evidence of human-forced global challenges before humanity, could be a mistake of colossal proportions.
