They're counting on you

To count ... heh

Posted by Kate Sheppard at 8:52 AM on 01 Aug 2007

SUVsWNYC is calling on New Yorkers to go outside and count the SUVs in their 'hood as part of an experiment in getting citizens involved in the reporting process.

Sez their website:

This our experiment in "crowdsourcing," where we employ you, the listener, in an act of journalism. We're trying to find out just how much gas-guzzling SUV use there is throughout the New York area, with all the talk of environmental sustainability in the city.

So you go out and report, then leave a comment with 1) your neighborhood, 2) your block (street and cross street) 3) the number of SUVs parked 4) the total number of cars parked. Nearly 300 people have checked in so far, and the results are pretty fascinating. You'd think that SUVs are the curse of sprawling suburbs and that no one in their right mind would want to drive, let alone park, an SUV in New York. But no, not so much.

The informal survey continues through today, so if you're a Gristmill reader in NYC, represent, yo.

Wow

Cool idea!

WNYC

I think you mean WNYC, not WCNY.

Opps.

You're right, Werdna. It's been corrected.

Aveo! Aveo!

I live in Kent, WA -- the original home of the giant truck, duallies and 10 cylinder hemis, smack dab in the land of espressos and software engineers.

Strangely, though, there's a cool underclass of Hip Hopsters, rich-poor, black-white, driving tiny hatchbacks, their heads topped with NY striped baseball caps, and fat pipe exhausts hanging down from the auto carriage, pumping bass with Boom Tubes.

These dudes "meet the bartender" in fuel efficient glory!   I've seen lots of Aveos and Cobalts, swimming amidst the sea of miniVans and big rigs...but it's still a good thing.

bridge bust

Just fascinating to me how many ridiculously large SUVs were on the bridge that just went crashing into the river - front page news all over the world...

Perhaps we should be counting SUVs in disaster photos?
