GOP analyst: Democrats now must compromise on global warming

Hold the applause on the administration's

On a new blog called Terra Rossa -- "Where Conservatives Consider a New Energy Future" -- GOP consultant Whit Ayres argues that when President Bush at the G8 summit declared his willingness to "seriously consider" carbon emission reductions over the next forty years, he took a "major step" in the direction of his environmental critics. Says Ayres:

I don't think anyone could argue that conservatives are not trying to compromise on the issue. While many conservative voters, politicians, and business leaders might prefer to take no action to limit carbon emissions, they have heard the call to action and are clearly working toward a cap they can live with.

Ayres claims the President has undergone a "sea-change" on global warming, but ignores these inconvenient facts:

  • No agreement to reduce carbon emissions came out of the G8 summit, despite much pressure from Germany and Europe.
  • The President talks of "long-term" [requires subscription] "aspirational" goals, but has committed to nothing but discussion.
  • Shortly after taking office, a White House insider admitted [requires subscription] to Andrew Revkin of The New York Times that the Bush administration intended to do as little as possible about global warming: "There's a sense in which everybody's saying the American public doesn't have the attention span or background to pay attention to this issue," the official said. "There's still a hopeful perception around the White House that this has gone away."
  • Not only did the President break a reassuring campaign promise regarding carbon emissions, but just this last year told a biographer that he was a "dissenter" on the "theory" of global warming.

So we have good reason to doubt the sincerity of the Bush administration, despite the bland assurances of progress from White House environmental chief Jim Connaughton. And in fact this past week the president himself, in his own words, has let us know exactly how high a priority he gives the issue. Four recent speeches -- to a Southern Baptist convention, to a homebuilders convention, at a political fund-raiser, and at a nuclear power plant yesterday -- were put through a word processor, and the results show what is on the president's mind, and what is not:

The President concluded the discussion of global warming yesterday by saying: "we're moving forward because the Supreme Court told us to move forward."

As if to say: If not for that ruling, we wouldn't pretend to care!

With this White House posture the Democrats should "come to the table" and offer concessions?

Obviously not: Bush is a foot-dragger, and must be pressured to show any results. Despite calling for voluntary measures for others to reduce emissions, he has made as little effort as possible himself.

Ayres can't be serious. If this is a trial balloon, it should be shot down immediately.

That about says it all

I guess Bush forgot that his administration said in 2005 that it was already "moving forward" on the U.N. initiative to address man made climate destabilization, well before the Supreme Court weighed in on the matter.  Or maybe he was just lying then, and he is lying again, now.

Trust ? What's that ?

>> good reason to doubt the sincerity of the Bush administration  >>

Aw, come on, the guy has been sincere right from the start when he abruptly changed tact on global warming straight after he was elected.

Y'all gotta trust a person like that !

We all have to trust politicians, y'all still vote hey

If you didn't trust them y'all would boycott the polls !

But only I tear up ballot papers, crazy eh ?

But, it isn't a sea change...

George Bush has been acknowledging global warming, in various speeches, for years.  It's the actions of his administration that are saying he isn't being sincere.

Bush is not a "foot-dragger"

Bush is an uncompromising obstructionist when it comes to meaningful action on global warming. He just publicly lies about it beginning when he started campaigning for the presidency in 1999. No action will happen when Bush is in office.

Friedman in today NY Times writes that the only thing blocking action is a few politicians who are putting their own interests ahead of the United State's well-being. Bush is not only one of them, he is the leader of them.

Infinitely worse than a foot-dragger

Hey, all:

Yep, what Jo said, but even more--Bush is a liar, willing to say anything for corporate political authoritarian benefit.  COUNT ON IT.  History will record it as such--plus, that he and his administration are the worst in U.S. history.  The many millions of human lives and uncountable lives of the Earth's biota, let alone entire species, plus trillions of dollars misspent on their narcissist exercises, only has yet to be written up.

New Rule

Whenever anyone characterizes 'The American People' as being this way or that let's go ahead and assume that the speaker is really only describing his or herself and promptly deny that the statement has any persuasive effect.

What Bush has been really doing

From this weeks Rolling Stone:
"The Secret Campaign of President Bush's Administration to Deny Global Warming"

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/15148655/the_s ...

Personal, Not Governmental

Reducing CO2 doesn't require government intervention.   Every person can reduce the total CO2 just by using half as much energy.

Secret Campaign?

I find it difficult to understand how Bush's camapaign against recognizing and/or doing anything about global heating can ever be called a "Secret".

That being said, I welcome anything that reveals the depth of the current administration's screwing of the country.
