Quote of the day

From that new French dude

Posted by David Roberts at 1:16 PM on 07 May 2007

I want to send word to our American friends to tell them they can count on our friendship, which has been forged by the tragedies of history that we have confronted together. I want to tell them that France will always be at their side when they need her. But I also want to tell them that friendship is accepting that friends can think differently, and that a great nation like the United States should not be an obstacle to the fight against global warming, but on the contrary should take the lead because the future of all humanity is at stake.

-- newly elected conservative French president Nicolas Sarkozy

(Ripped-off wholesale from Kit Stolz)

What is peculiar about American conservatives?

The Tories in the UK look like Earth Firsters! compared to their ideological soul mates in the US. This quote from the new French leader is another example of how marginal American conservatives are on this issue. Being in global warming denial is not a precondition to membership in conservative circles around the world, but it sure is in the United States. To be a politically correct conservative in the US you have to be in with the carbon crowd.

I don't know what is to blame for this. Maybe the dominance of the Sunbelt in the GOP, or the strangle hold present and former oil men have on the party. The reasons for this is a discussion we should be having on Grist.

Religion the problem?

Maybe it's because of the Evangelical Christian conservatives that climate change is a hands-off issue for most Republicans. Since they believe that our actions don't really effect our future, it's all in God's plan for us.

Or it could just be that oil and coal companies are super wealthy and generous with contributions to the GOP.
