Testifying before the Texas Legislature on climate change

Read about it and/or watch it happen

Posted by Andrew Dessler (Guest Contributor) at 10:34 PM on 01 May 2007

There are something like 12 bills in the Texas Legislature this session addressing climate change. Most of them are deader than a doornail, but we might see passage this session of a bill to create a Texas climate change task force. This doesn't sound like much, but for Texas it's actually quite an accomplishment.

To get an idea of what testifying there is like, you can take a look at my archived testimony here (Real Audio). My testimony starts at 9:20. Particularly entertaining is the question and answer session starting at 19:20.

Keeping a Vigil

Hey, all:

Gee, Andrew, had we but known beforehand we could have gotten together a vigil on your behalf.  One should never go there without all the spiritual support one can get.  Heh heh heh.

Your point about being deader than a doornail is accurate, but in defense of doornails, at least they have a proud historical tradition of service, compared to the Texas Ledge.

There were something like 40-60 individual bills introduced this session just on renewable/sustainable energy alone, further adding to the grim negative chances of passage.  Texas is second in population among the states but we sit at something like 25th in such simple measures as incentives for sustainable energy.  I see nothing before the current Legislature to change that.

It is a perverse sounding wish to want the Ledge to be in session longer, but just like the motive of the audience shouting "Encore!", they oughta stay up there until they get it right.

Gawd, I miss Molly Ivins.  I will hold my breath hoping for a good outcome to your testimony.

Like talking to a brick wall

Unbelievable. But a very good attempt on your part. I think you deserve a medal.
