The Economist has a great article on Australia's crippling drought. If this is what global warming is likely to bring Australia, we should pay attention and hopefully learn something about how best to cope.

Coming to a Place near You

Yes what is happening in Australia is no accidental drought.

It is caused by the oiled sea... it is in the Southern Hemisphere ..

The Northern Hemisphere's climate is confused by glacial ice water melt .... it won't stay that way for long

Already the USA is experiencing a widening drought.

Yes better get prepared... the changes will be very swift as the climate change momentum becomes exponential.

You will be amazed at what can come of all this ... truly amazed, even if it does not precipitate a world "water war", it may, and most probably lead to human extinction .... in your life time..

I am reading a book called

The Little Ice Age. A blip in weather patterns caused starvation all around the world. Global warming is the mother of all blips and humans will be doing what they are best at, adapting to change. The stronger the economy, and the more numerous and diverse one's trading partners, the better off a given country will be.

We should all watch how Australia copes to get a feel for what is just around the corner.

The poor who rely on subsistence farming are the ones, as usual, who are really going to feel the brunt of this. They can't move to a better place, they have nothing to replace failed crops with.

Water trading?

Well of course that is the solution. Just like those eels, get as much as you can for the last drop.

When it's gone the people starve and the traders read the "economist" to find something new to trade.

Wake up people. Why doesn't that whole region require composting toilets and air pressure augmented water systems that would need a 10nth of the water to take a shower or wash dishes?

Because that would be a government based non "free" market solution.

Why isn't all of that water used in cities recycled from waste water using Austrailia's abundant solar energy?

Why isn't pinpoint water injection used for irrigation? Why isn't organic farming using mulching that saves and stores water being required? Why aren't biogas digestors being used to process all the manure and farm waste and also recover that water?

Because the traders wouldn't like it. And they pay politicians.

Just plain disgusting. Free market? Oh I got your free market. Market this!!
