The times, are they really a-changin'?

Bob Dylan on climate change

Posted by Kate Sheppard at 12:02 PM on 23 Apr 2007

C'mon Bob, don't romanticize idiocy

Bob Dylan - great artist and songwriter, but as far as political thinking? Nada. He makes enigmatic pronouncements from time to time, which sound cool but don't mean much.

I hate to criticize the cultural heroes of my generation, but some of them never grew up: "Stuck in the Sixties."

There are other musicians, less well known than Dylan, who have aged gracefully and kept up with the times. Folksinger U. Utah Philips for example.

By the way, I think it's time to re-discover folk music and the music of 1964-74. It has an idealism and purity that will be valued in the new cultural Zeitgeist. The clips now appearing on YouTube make me realize what a Golden Era that was.

Dude, Dylan IS Right

Listen to what Bob Dylan really said in the referenced article - and man I hate it when journalists are so lazy they can't quote it themselves (no offense to Grist):

"I don't expect politicians to solve anybody's problems....We've got to take the world by the horns and solve our own problems. The world owes us nothing, each and every one of us, the world owes us not one single thing. Politicians or whoever."

On case you're still clueless like a dumb blond in Southern California, Bob Dylan just said that (1) politicians can't solve Global Warming and (2) that the "world" is not something to ask for favors, since it cannot return the request.  Very simple, very elegant, and very tight.

So, what's the problem?  Did somebody just deny that Global warming did not exist?  Certainly not Bob Dylan.  Where on Earth did anyone say he was in denial from reading that piece?

I'm not defending Bob Dylan although perhaps like him, I really suck at giving interviews to the media.  What is he meaning to say?  Read his exact words I quoted above.  What he is saying is that the "world" has no moral, ethical, poetic, or religious ability to fix our problems and that we need to "take the bull by the horns" because the politicians have utterly failed us.  Fairly existential, but he's got a point.

As usual, perhaps Bob Dylan has out-classed us all.  To posture about him maybe being a denialist is unfair in the extreme and definitely not fair.

I'm glad you could tease a meaning out of Dylan's remarks, Sam. I gave up years ago.

Problem is, he burst on the scene as a boy genius and ever since then people have expected super-human wisdom from him. It's a hell of a position to be in, to have to be an oracle.
