Making Other Arrangements

What are you doing to respond to the climate crisis?

Posted by Erik Hoffner (Guest Contributor) at 11:10 AM on 02 Apr 2007

Orion magazine has a brand new section, of interest to all Gristmill readers, where folks from all over are encouraged to write in and share what changes their families, communities, churches, etc. are undertaking to respond, now, to the climate crisis, peak oil, etc. I've seen so many ripe ideas posted on Gristmill, BioD's plug-in hybrid bike being a good example. So have a look at some of these great ideas and initiatives (a clustered, renewably-powered, affordable housing community in Missoula, for example) in the first installment of this section, called Making Other Arrangements, and share your own projects and ideas.

Here's a good example of communities making other arrangements I just ran across: a grassroots group Transportation Alternatives is pushing for a shared bike program for the streets of NYC, like the programs in Lyon, France, Stockholm, Sweden, and Portland, Ore: http://www.nysun.com/article/51301

Thanks, Erik, nice idea.  I have been meaning to do interviews with parishioners, but have shrunk from it, dreading the repercussions on the by all means well-intending and hospitable pastors.  But I shall see what I can do.

On BioD: I love BioD madly, as is well known, but I have never had a good image of him on his hybrid bike.  (Yes, I have had to fantasize ... ) Moreover, it is worth commenting on the turn-over among Gristmill contributors.  Even as recently as last September, there were a couple of people who seem not to check in anymore.

Personally, I am sorry not to hear from kmp, aka Kaela; and from Patrick, whom I dubbed Patrick a Beijing.
