Fossil Awards shame obstructionist delegates at Bali talks

Posted by Youth Movement (Guest Contributor) at 1:18 PM on 05 Dec 2007

You may have heard about the Fossil Awards given at the United Nations Bali climate negotiations. A collaboration between a number of youth delegations and Avaaz.org, the awards are given to nations whose delegates have obstructed progress during the course of the talks. Here's a first-hand account of the first daily Fossil Awards ceremony, when Canada won the infamous prize. Yesterday, Japan managed to win first, second, and third place for threatening to pull out of the Kyoto protocol. Check out this video of the ceremony:

Did I Elect These People?

Why is it that Grist Types are always bemoaning how the people have no voice, except when it comes to really restrictive committees from Europe or esoteric conferences held in places were we have little or no chance of visiting, more or less knowing where to point to them on a globe.

Case in point: You have been going on and on about some event in Bali.   Who is in this event?   Who elected them?  Is the make up of the group democratic?   Is the composition representative of world population?   What powers do they have?  Quite frankly, I'm a member of the group that likes global warming.   The last think I want is for anyone to "do something" about it, since I think it's the greatest boon to the poor there ever was.
