Australia steps up to oppose Japanese whaling

This move by the Australian government is great news. Moral: elections matter! Let's hope other countries follow suit and stop this madness masquerading as "scientific research".

hurray Greenpeace!

Yes, Jason, this is excellent news.  But I wonder what specifically is to be accomplished.  The Australians now will support a mission rather like that of the Greenpeace volunteers, only with a larger, more powerful vessel (I guess), an aircraft, and crew who may or may not be personally engaged.  Will they actually attempt to thwart the Japanese whalers, as the Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd people try to do?  Do they intend to frighten away the whales?  Or do they intend solely to hover and take notes?

Is it the position of the Australian government already that the Japanese whaling expedition is illegal?  If so, then plainly they will consider actual interference to be justified.  But then, how much interference are they prepared to make, at this point?  What is going on, on the diplomatic level, between Australia and Japan?
