Alaska Senator defends young constituent against Limbaugh's attacks

Those of you who don't read the comments under our posts may have missed this. Two days ago Nathan Wyeth brought news that talk radio gasbag Rush Limbaugh has been mocking a young Yup'ik Eskimo from Alaska who came to testify to Congress about the accelerating loss of her people's traditional way of life due to climate change.

During her testimony, she broke down in tears. Said Limbaugh: "Wah, wah, wah, wah."

You should know that Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Ala.), who represents young Cheryl Charlee Lockwood, defended her constituent in comments, saying that "her motives for testifying were unfairly questioned" and that she "demonstrated her passion for her culture and I am proud to call her my constituent."

Classy move. Limbaugh should take notes.

I wish more Republican politicians would distance themselves from that buffoon.

Thats the scary part though.

He's so far out there that he makes the GOP's extremist policies look relatively moderate.

Controversy = Attention = $$$

Nothing to see here, folks, move along. This is just entertainment.

Conservatives will distance themselves from Rush about the same time Liberals distance themselves from Michael Moore and Al Sharpton. In other words, when it actually costs them votes and campaign donations.

Are you claiming that Michael Moore and/ or Al Sharpton:

are as influential in the Democratic party as Rush Limbaugh is in the Republican party?
are as extreme in their views as Rush Limbaugh is?

If not, why the casual equivalence?

misleading headline

i actually read comments section yesterday, and Murkowski didn't address Rush's crude and juvenile behavior/comments at all.

she DID say she was proud of Lockwood; she did NOT have the courage to condemn Limbaugh.

Rush v Moore

KenG - I seem to remember that after the 1994 elections, Rush was singled out by the Republican leadership as a particularly powerful reason why they won the house. Rush continues to have excellent contacts with the GOP, even after his 'problem' with drugs.

On the other hand, I'd be amazed to find out if Harry Reid or any of the Democrat leadership would even publically admit to taking a phonecall from Michael Moore, or possible Al Sharpton.

As for extreme views - Michael Moore thinks that the US should have universal healthcare, something which the majority of Americans agree with. As for Rush - where to start?

Republican Senators are human

Last year Lisa Murkowski came to Juneau to debate the war with Veterans for Peace and while I didn't agree with her position on the war I came away with the impression that she is respectful of other people. What is lacking is any response from Rep Don Young or Senator Ted Stevens. Their silence on this one issue would not be so deafening if their mouths weren't screaming insults at anyone with a differing view. Rush Limbaugh is a nice guy compared to Ted Stevens and Don Young.
