Grist on Today Show

We're pleased as punch to let you know that NBC's Today show has invited Grist to be part of its special "Ends of the Earth" environmental coverage the week of Nov. 5. While Matt, Al, and Ann venture to exotic locales like Antarctica, the Arctic, and the equator, we'll be hangin' with Meredith in Rockefeller Plaza, offering up green-living hints from our new book, Wake Up and Smell the Planet. Keep an eye out for us on Monday, Nov. 5, and Tuesday, Nov. 6, between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., on NBC.

And hey, while we're allowing ourselves to preen a little: did you happen to notice our recent appearances in Time and Newsweek? Yep, we're blushing, but we're also really excited that our site and our book are making a splash.

Haven't gotten yourself a copy of that book yet? Buy it today. It makes a good read, a great holiday gift, and a fantastic doorstop.

spiking punch?!

Yes, I had seen Chip's interview, if that is what it was, in Newsweek.  (Does he really talk with such staccato concision?)  When I first read it, I thought it was so inoffensive as to be bland.  Now, on re-reading it, I see that he is saying things that would no doubt be new and surprising to many people; but in my case, since I have been reading Grist a while now, they have become second-nature -- which is good, and I am grateful -- , so naturally they seemed bland at first.

The blurb in Time was sillier, but at least it was positive.  One sentence deserves comment:

<<
But Giller is out to rebrand the environment movement, turning the focus toward sustainable lifestyles, not just save-the-whale campaigns.
>>

Being as fervent an evangelist as anyone in the glorious mission to save the whales, I have no  problem with that.  We should notice that it does not say "not," it says "not just."  Promoting "sustainable lifestyles" is certainly an admirable cause.  But let us remember that "sustainable lifestyles" that have no regard for animals, whether for wildlife or for the countless captive animals exploited for food, clothing and other purposes, can be called neither truly pro-environment, nor truly sustainable.

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.
