Report Card logoNothing gets a student's rear in gear faster than a failing grade on an important report card. And the colleges and universities that scored poorly on last year's College Sustainability Report Card are no different. Today, the Sustainable Endowments Institute released its 2008 edition, revealing that 68 percent of the schools surveyed improved their overall grade by taking action on sustainability measures.

The 2008 Report Card also shows that many schools are making aggressive carbon reduction commitments, increasing the use of local food, implementing green building policies, and looking to renewable energy funds for endowment investments.

The number of schools included in the report doubled this year and a new category was added as well. Transportation joins administration, climate/energy, food/recycling, green building, endowment transparency, investment priorities, and shareholder engagement as areas that were examined at each school.

Six schools are recognized in the report as overall College Sustainability Leaders (receiving an overall grade of A-minus): Carleton College, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Middlebury College, University of Vermont, and University of Washington.

As for the 194 schools that didn't quite make the grade, I advise you to get started on that homework already!

Graded on a curve?

It's good to see that someone is holding schools accountable for their claims of being green- and that so many are doing a lot more than just talking about sustainability. And maybe a few that don't will decide to start cramming before the next test!

A Valuable Report

My name is Chaz Littlejohn and I lead a campaign at UNC-Chapel Hill to set up a endowment proxy voting committee.  By incorporating this issue so prominently in their measure of campus sustainability, the College Sustainability Report Card has really given credibility and clout to our movement.  Thanks for all the hard work.  It's definitely worth it.

Campus Sustainability Perspectives on the Report

Julian Dautremont-Smith, from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) wrote a review of the 2008 College Sustainability Report Card.  Now that you've read the College Sustainability Report Card for yourself, join the discussion about it on the AASHE Campus Sustainability Perspectives Blog.  Did the report accurately reflect your school's environmental performance? How will you use the report's findings on your campus?  Is there anything that should be added to the report next year?
