Umbra on toxic schools

Posted by Bricolage at 12:06 PM on 30 Aug 2006

When our precious bundles of joy grow up to be precious bundles of student, the last thing we want to do is send them off to spend the day in a toxic environment. But many school buildings, especially those that are newly constructed or renovated, are tainted with none-too-wholesome substances. A mother wonders if there's anything she can do to make her daughter's new preschool a healthier place, and advice maven Umbra Fisk offers a lesson plan.

toxic schools

In reference to the article on toxic schools, I just recently read in "Naturally Clean" by Hollender, that certain plants can be helpful in cleaning the air.  Plants that are recommended are:
boston fern (the overall best in purifying performance)
areca palm
bamboo palm
rubber plant
english ivy (excels at removing formaldehyde)
peace lily ( removes formald.,alcohols, acetone, benzene & trichloroethylene)
and even schefflera, spider plant & weeping fig were on the list.
Hope that helps.  It's certainly a very GREEN way to clean our air!  :)
