Jason Wentworth, eco-friendly laundromat owner, answers Grist's questions

Posted by Bricolage at 11:12 AM on 14 Aug 2006

Jason Wentworth knows from clean. He owns Washboard Eco Laundry in Portland, Maine, where he offers solar-heated water, energy-efficient machines, and earth-friendly suds. As InterActivist this week, Wentworth airs his dirty laundry as he chats with Grist about growing up on an organic farm, dealing with debt to follow his dream, and convincing people to live simpler lives. Send Wentworth your burningest questions by noon PDT on Wednesday; we'll publish his answers to selected questions on Friday.

Jason and the Laundronauts

This was just delightful to read!  Renewed my faith in Grist and the view of "activism."  It worries me when we think that technology can "save" us and when activism just means buying "green" and not reducing consumption patterns.  I really liked what he said about those perspectives leading us to not tackling larger issues, ones where we need to take a long look at our own behavior (and systems issues) and make changes. Just yesterday I received my copy of Naturally Clean from Seventh Generation (after its founder was featured in Interactivist and I wrote to them).  It is an excellent resource for all sorts of household cleaning issues (and beyond) and doesn't just promote their products. I thought I knew most of what the book might say but it went way beyond what I knew. I highly recommend it.
