Got Inspiration?

These Goldman Environmental Prize winners are changing the world

Posted by Bricolage at 12:23 PM on 28 Apr 2006

Could you keep the Pentagon from burning chemical weapons in your town? Stop illegal loggers in their tracks? Prevent a massive canal project from damaging one of the planet's most storied waterways? These may seem impossible tasks, but the winners of this year's Goldman Environmental Prizes have accomplished all that and more. Today we wrap up our weeklong series of profiles of the winners. If you've missed a day, rewind and catch up. The inspiration will be worth it.

muddy interview with Tarcisio

No doubt this man knows what he is doing, and deserves our praise, indeed deserves to be considered a hero, knowing that he is all the time putting his life at risk.

Still, we do not come away very enlightened from this interview, I think, about the nature of his Amazonian community, including as it does a number of interested groups, some competing, some potentially cooperating.  Whom does he try to meet?  Whom does he actually talk to?  What does he say to them?  How does he try to establish a sense of common interests?  Does he dare challenge anyone directly?  Are there any people whom he refuses to meet with?  Does he lead people in an organized way?  Are they in a position to march and demonstrate effectively?  Are they committed to non-violence?  Can they sometimes threaten an activism of a bit more of a hands-on type?  What kind of Christianity does he practice?  How does that affect his work?  Does he like clergymen?  Does he hate clergymen?  Is he himself a clergyman?

Pathetic question, about what the US might do, for the sake of Amazonian forestland.  And pretty dismal answer too.

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.
