Give Him a Farmhand

Posted by Grist at 12:07 PM on 24 Mar 2006

How will you be marking Farmworker Awareness Week next week? What? No plans yet? Good thing Tirso Moreno is here to point to some ideas. An organizer with the Farmworker Association of Florida and this week's InterActivist, Moreno also answers questions from readers (including a whole third-grade class!) about immigration reform, organic produce, pesticide regulations, and more.

Tirso Moreno

I found Moreno's response to these questions much more interesting and worthwhile than I had anticipated.  In his earlier interview with the Grist editors, he seemed to come across as rather impatient, as though environmentalists could never really understand his concerns, and his talking to Grist was a waste of his precious time.  But in his answers to our questions, he showed a friendlier and more sympathetic side.

Unfortunately, his answer to that important question (not mine!), for which he was grateful, on work availability in Latin America, was kind of over my head.

The kids' questions were terrific!  Good for them, good for their teacher, and thanks to Tirso for treating them so respectfully.

What Tirso said at the end about the proposed immigration reform legislation really needs to be heard.  As a Catholic with left-wing values, I am usually mortified and horrified by the positions on public policy taken by many of our bishops and priests.  But in this matter, I am very proud of Cardinal Mahony of LA and others in the Church for standing up and saying the right thing, for once.

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.
