Boulder rocks

City passes municipal carbon tax

Posted by Sarah K. Burkhalter at 5:21 PM on 13 Nov 2006

Have you been on the edge of your seat wondering whether Boulder, Colo.'s carbon tax passed?

It did, with about 58 percent of the vote, making the city the first in the nation to pass a municipal tax charging residents and businesses for the energy they use.

Boulder's citizens will have to pay a mere $1.33 extra per month on average toward energy bills, while businesses will pay $3.80 a month; altogether the tax should raise about $1 million annually, which will be put toward educating the public on energy efficiency and such.

Business group Boulder Tomorrow opposed the tax; citizens apparently recognized the importance of attacking global warming Today.

The 5% Project

Awesome!

I never thought this would gain steam, but it just goes to show what reason will do for people. I hope this catches on, maybe via the mayors' initiative to endorse Kyoto standards.
