How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic

'It's cold today in Wagga Wagga'

Posted by Coby Beck (Guest Contributor) at 8:48 AM on 03 Nov 2006

(Part of the How to Talk to a Global Warming Skeptic guide)

Objection: It was way colder than normal today in Wagga Wagga, proof that there is no global warming.

Does this even deserve an answer? If we must ...

Answer: The chaotic nature of weather means that no conclusion about climate can ever be drawn from a single data point, hot or cold. The temperature of one place at one time is just weather, and says nothing about climate, much less climate change, much less global climate change.

Agreed, it's an Average

We are talking about average global temperature.  So, of course it can be cold in Somalia and hot in Brazila day to day.

However, average global temperature has remained relatively steady the last 7 years after the big "hockey stick" spike.

And it's still 2-3 degrees F lower than the highs recorded by the Andrill studies.

good for the goose

Actually, jabailo, if you want to claim that global warming stopped in 1998, then you have to let me claim that it started again in 1999.
