Definitely not a Roosevelt Republican

Pombo proposes selling off nat'l parks

Posted by Ana Unruh Cohen (Guest Contributor) at 11:05 AM on 23 Sep 2005

Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA), chairman of the House Resources Committee, has officially established beyond any doubt that he is no Teddy Roosevelt Republican. Today, draft legislation from his committee proposed selling off a number of national park holdings, including Theodore Roosevelt Island, home of the TR memorial in Washington, D.C.

As reported by Greenwire, the other sites include:

  • Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, Texas
  • Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve, Alaska
  • Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, Alaska
  • Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Alaska
  • Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, California
  • Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Arizona
  • Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, Massachusetts
  • Kobuk Valley National Park, Alaska
  • Lake Clark National Park, Alaska
  • Mary McLeod Bethune Council House, Washington, D.C.
  • Minute Man Missile National Historic Site, South Dakota
  • Noatak National Preserve, Alaska
  • Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Monument, Pennsylvania
  • Thomas Stone National Historic Site, Maryland
  • Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, Alaska

Pombo also proposes selling advertising space just about anywhere in National Parks to help generate revenue.

I noticed something.....

It might be a coincidence (I think not) but 7 out of 16 parks on the list are in Alaska.  I would be interested in seeing where exactly they are located.  How many oil companies are looking into each of these 16 sites?  Could that have anyhting to do with the "selling off" of the parks?

A Micro Biogrophy

Richard Pombo is a rancher -- one of the lowest forms of life in the universe -- and represents them and developers.  He is probably the most anti-environmental member of Congress, as evidenced by his newly bill that would partially repeal the Endangered Species Act.  People like him belong in prison, not in government.  The fact that he's a member of the latter is a perfect example of all that's wrong with this country.

Jeff Hoffman
Parks for Sale...

While Pombo's mouthpiece at the House Resources Committee claims the proposal to sell national parks was simply an attention getter, a purpose it truly served, what should be as equally disconcerting as his proposal is the lack of outrage by Democrats. The GOP seems to be imploding, what with the SEC investigation into Sen. Frist, the indictment of DeLay, and the White House's continued stumbling about. Yet in this void of leadership the Democrats are nowhere to be found. And we definitely need some leadership across the board, not just in the environmental sector. That said, someone needs to stand up to repudiate Pombo's suggestion and to put Paul Hoffman's rewrite of the National Park Service's Management Policies into the fire. --www.nationalparkstraveler.com

Some Republicans are green, others Green

There is a lot of opposition to Pombo in his own district.  The new BLOG saynotopombo at blogspot.com is one example of recent grassroots commentary.  There are options for Republicans with an environmental consciousness.  They can join Martha Marks's Republicans for Environmental Protection.  On the other hand, I left the Republican Party for the Greens.  In fact, today, I initiated a discussion of that choice, Martha's or mine, at my personal site.  It is a companion to PomboWatch,  which I also manage.
